Welcome to Ohau 2025

Mike’s forecast for the Winter of 2025!

Based on the rainfall averages my forecast for the 2024 Season was pretty much right. We had over 3 meters cumulative snow fall over the winter of 2024 following a dry summer.

Well up here at Ohau the summer of 24/25 has been very dry again so the pattern of the last calendar year of the Lake Ohau Station rainfall is repeating.

Moreover the variance to the annual average is small which in short means that if the summer is dry then the winter will be wet and snowy on the mountain.

Coupled with the NIWA Seasonal Climate Outlook March - May 2025 is telling us that “La Niña-like signals in both the ocean and the atmosphere have weakened significantly very recently.” That is a strengthening “El Nino” weather pattern and snow leading into winter.

My forecast for the 2025 Ohau Snow Season is;

“Snow in May it will Stay
Snow in June there will be more
Snow in July you can Rely”

In light of this forecast and the dates for the July School Holidays, Ohau’s planned opening is the 21st of June 2025, school holidays begin 28th of June 2025 and Closing will be 28th September, the middle Sunday of the September School Holidays.

We always close for the second week of the September School Holidays so you can spend a week at the crib (bach for those north of the Waitaki River) and get the lawns mowed and the pre summer maintenance underway for the holidays.

Happy skiing and riding…
